Known as the Festival of Lights, Diwali is a major Hindu festival celebrated in Mauritius, usually in October or November. Homes and streets are decorated with lights and oil lamps, and families share sweets, gifts, and fireworks. It symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and good over evil.

This Hindu festival dedicated to Lord Shiva is celebrated with great fervor, usually in February or March. Thousands of devotees undertake a pilgrimage to the sacred lake of Grand Bassin, carrying ‘kanwars’ (decorated wooden arches). The festival involves fasting, night-long prayers, and the offering of bael leaves to Shiva.

Celebrated by the Chinese community in Mauritius, this festival marks the beginning of the Chinese lunar calendar, usually in January or February. It’s characterized by lion and dragon dances, red lanterns, and family feasts. Firecrackers are set off to ward off evil spirits.
